How does the image of the human body interlink with meaning and our consciousness? How does transformation, contortion and metamorphosis of human figures connect with our consciousness and convey continuity in identity? Nogol Mazloumi strives to visualize the quest for meaning in the human body. In her works, as in ‘Body in Power’ collection, she has also been curious to see how body and power can connect, especially when decisions of the powerful influence the livelihoods of ordinary people. Our bodies reflect possession of power and lack of it. Funnily though, bodies of the powerful, alive or dead, come under scrutiny by the powerless. The powerless can demonstrate their power by visualizing the bodies of the powerful as the downtrodden really and truly see them.
The preoccupation started with illness of Nogol’s mother, as her body shrivelled and changed form as a result, ending in her death. In parallel, the notion of ideal body, male or female, showcasing beauty and power amused her, especially as represented in the media. Nogol continues to explore the human body as the conduit for meaning and our awareness.
Nogol’s paintings are influenced by elements in her immediate environment. It all starts in her mind, then in the studio and through daily experiences as gradually everything expands to also include the bigger environment, namely the society, the regional geography and the world.
Nogol was born in 1988 and studied graphic design and later animation at university.
