Solmaz sees art as the peeping hole into a world beyond that is ruled only by imagination and is free of constraints. All emotions and mental images are amplified in this world. It is in this world that the artist truly lives. Artists travel between the two worlds, bringing images from the other one into ours. This is the artist’s mission. They observe, travel, experience, return and depict.
No artist works in the vacuum though. They live and work in the context of the society that affects all aspects of their lives and lives of all others around them, from everyday interactions to culture and environment. Thus the artist and his/her work becomes inseparable from the context. Every piece of work is the offspring of an event in the life of the artist within that context. The artistic journey is to visualize the event and bring back the image.
For Solmaz this event can be an observation of interactions among humans in today’s world and how people are growing distant, while technologically growing closer to one another. She called one series of artworks ‘Anachronism’ and experiences of women throughout the world in the series ‘The Fall’.
Solmaz draws from daily impressions to create new visual experiences. Her characters are alone in the setting caught in an entanglement. The elements in her paintings seem caught in a confusion that enwrap life, crying for freedom. She also draws from Iranian mythology motifs, the battle between good and evil, in a surreal environment. We find ourselves watching a dream. Perhaps a nightmare at times. It’s all a fantasy! She is a master of dark art on an expedition into deep layers of our being, our collective and individual subconscious. Isn’t that what mythology does?
Solmaz Nabati was born in Tehran in 1988. She studied painting for her BA and MA.
